.cb Charge to the Director and Advisory Board of LOTS
.bb "I. Purpose of LOTS"
The Stanford Low Overhead Timesharing Facility (LOTS) is a
computer resource primarily dedicated to support of the instructional
programs of the University. First priority for access to the
resources of LOTS is to be given to regularly scheduled courses which
require computer support, and second priority is to unsponsored
research users. However, in recognition of the educational value of
non-scheduled and non-anticipated computer usage, access to LOTS
is to be kept as simple as possible and made available, as resources
permit, to any member of the community who applies for independent use
of it. Decisions on the allocation of on-line data storage space and
other computer resources are to be made so as to deliver these
resources to the greatest number of Stanford users while meeting
these priorities.
Since LOTS is to be operated as a University-wide resource
for instruction and unsponsored research, LOTS resources are to be
neither sold nor bartered to special interests.
Other services and activities are subject to the approval of the Provost.
.bb "II. Director and Advisory Board"
Responsibility for the success of LOTS rests with a Director
appointed by the Provost for a three year term and an Advisory Board
composed of nine faculty and students appointed by the Provost for
one year renewable terms. Members of the Advisory Board will be
chosen from a wide constituency to assure that a broad range of
interests is represented. Among the specific duties of the Director
and Board are:
a. Recommend approval of the annual budget of LOTS as
prepared by the Director.
b. Identify the categories into which users will be
classified and the quanta of resources such as on-line storage space,
CPU, and memory, which will be assigned to each category.
c. Approve the procedures by which accounts for use of LOTS
are opened and closed.
d. Receive requests for new services such as software
purchases and advise which requests should be approved.
e. Develop procedures, including such activities as courses
offered by students, to widen the range of users of LOTS and to
insure that LOTS meets the primary objectives described above.
f. Identify possible new members for the Advisory Board as
requested by the Provost.
g. Approve or amend the Director's annual report to the
Provost respecting the effectiveness with which LOTS has met the
purposes set forth above.
.bb "III. Management"
Management of LOTS shall be the responsibility of the Director.
There will be a full-time manager reporting to the Director.
The manager's duties include:
a. Managing the operation of the LOTS equipment under the
according to policies set by the Director.
b. Employing such full and part time assistants as are
consistent with the objectives and the budget of LOTS.
c. Helping the director prepare an annual budget for LOTS to
be reviewed by the Advisory Board and submitted to the Provost for
approval.
